What is low carb?
Being on a low carb diet simply means that you are eating fewer carbohydrates and a higher proportion of fat along with adequate amounts of protein.
Our body loves natural food
Since ages we have been working hard in fields, sweating in the sun and eating enough natural unprocessed food which is already a low carb diet.
The more activity we do in our day to day life the less the chance of insulin production thus less fat accumulation.
In this modern era, natural food has been replaced by the factory processed food which includes direct carb starches. These high carbs result in high production of insulin and thus increased accumulation of unburn fat in our body.
But do you know some raw vegetables which also include high carbs?
These vegetables are not harmful to our body but if taken in appropriate quantities can prove to improve our health as well.
An ideal keto low-carb diet must have below 20 grams carb a day in its diet chart. So, you have to be more careful with some of the vegetables in your diet chart. You should probably be more careful with frequent use of vegetables such as tomatoes in our dishes– these carbs add up quickly towards our goal of 20 grams-a-day.
List of vegetables with high carb
Onions are not considered low carb vegetables although onion chops are part of our regular diet. It has a great share in almost all of our recipes. A cup of chopped onions i.e 160g contains 15g of carbs.

Beetroot has got many nutrient benefits but it is not considered low carb friendly. Every 100g or 1 cup of beetroot contains 10% of Carb.
Carrots contain about 12g of carbs per cup chopped about 128g. On an ideal keto low–carb diet of below 20 grams carbs per day, you may want to avoid it completely. But they are good on a normal diet if you’re aiming to keep in 50 or 100 grams of carbs per day.
Rutabaga or swede is a root vegetable, a form of Brassica napus. Other names include Swedish turnip, neep, snagger and turnip – however, elsewhere the name “turnip” usually refers to the related white turnip. Most people include it in their keto diet plan as it has less carb compared to potatoes. But when you consider our 20g daily limit, this isn’t low carb friendly. Every cup 140g of Rutabaga contains 12g of carb.
Celery root, or celeriac, does look like a potato but tastes like celery. It is low in calories, carbs, fat, and sugars, but provides fiber, antioxidants, and vitamin K.With only 5.9 grams of carbs per 100 grams of cooked vegetable, celeriac is a healthier, lower-carb alternative to potatoes. On our accumulative scale of 5g daily limit per vegetable, this isn’t included in a low carb friendly list.
The parsnip, Pastinaca sativa, is a root vegetable closely related to carrot and parsley; all belong to the family Apiaceae. It is a biennial plant usually grown as an annual. Its long, tuberous root has cream-colored skin and flesh, and, left in the ground to mature, it becomes sweeter in flavor after winter frosts. Wikipedia
1 cup of sliced parsnips of 133g contains 24g of carbs which is around 18%. Other than carbs it provides 100g cal and 6.5g of fiber.
Most Americans have potatoes in their daily diet in the form of potato chips, french fries, slices and in desserts.
Potatoes are a starchy and high carb vegetable. They are high in fiber (when including the skin) and low in calories. Every 100g of potatoes contains around 17g of carb which is way higher in our 20g daily low carb diet.
The sweet potato or sweet potato is a dicotyledonous plant that belongs to the bindweed or morning glory family, Convolvulaceae. Its large, starchy, sweet-tasting, tuberous roots are a root vegetable. The young leaves and shoots are sometimes eaten as greens. Wikipedia
This is a high carb vegetable and must be avoided when on a keto low carb diet. One cup of sweet potatoes of 133g contains 27g of carbs which is almost 20% of the content and fails on our diet plan of 20g only per day of carbs.
